Four questions matter for private storage. Who can read your files? Whose law governs them? What does the business sell? And can you leave easily? Price and polish come after those, not before.

One distinction worth understanding before the list: end-to-end encryption (E2EE) means the provider technically cannot read your files, because only you hold the keys. Encryption at rest means files are stored encrypted but the provider manages the keys, and your protection rests on their policies and the law they operate under. E2EE is the stronger technical guarantee. It usually costs you search, previews, easy sharing and document editing, which is why several capable services, Bigby included, take the at-rest approach instead. Neither is dishonest; they are different trades, and the list below says which each provider makes.

The business is funded entirely by subscriptions, from £3.99 per user per month for 100GB, with Collabora document editing on the Office plans and WebDAV export so you are never locked in. The honest weaknesses: no end-to-end encryption, no mobile apps yet, no free tier, and a higher price per gigabyte than Big Tech. Proton Drive: best end-to-end encrypted all-rounder

From the Swiss team behind Proton Mail. Everything is end-to-end encrypted by default, so Proton technically cannot read your files, which is a stronger guarantee than Bigby offers. Good apps across platforms, a free tier to try, and a credible track record on privacy. The trade-offs: Swiss rather than UK jurisdiction, E2EE limits like restricted search and previews, and the best value comes from buying the whole Proton bundle rather than storage alone. Tresorit: best for businesses that need E2EE and compliance

Swiss, end-to-end encrypted, and aimed squarely at businesses with compliance requirements: granular permissions, audit trails, admin controls. It is the most enterprise-ready service here and the most expensive, with pricing well above consumer services. For a regulated firm that needs E2EE with paperwork to match, Tresorit is the serious answer. For individuals it is usually more product, and more money, than the job needs.

Sync.com: best value end-to-end encryption

Canadian, end-to-end encrypted by default, and aggressively priced, with terabytes of E2EE storage for less than most rivals charge. Apps are functional rather than slick and the service has fewer collaboration features than the big platforms, but as pure private storage per pound it is hard to argue with. Canadian jurisdiction is the consideration for UK users: better than US, but not UK law.

pCloud: best for lifetime plans

Swiss company with a distinctive offer: pay once, keep the storage for life, which works out cheap if you stay for years. Polished apps and good media playback. The privacy caveat is significant though: end-to-end encryption is a paid add-on called pCloud Encryption rather than the default, and without it pCloud manages your keys like any mainstream provider. Buy it for the lifetime economics, not as a privacy-first choice unless you pay for the add-on.

MEGA: best free tier with E2EE

New Zealand based, end-to-end encrypted, and generous: around 20GB free, which is the largest E2EE free tier going. Paid plans are competitively priced. The company's colourful corporate history puts some people off, and its jurisdiction is a long way from the UK in every sense, but the current product is capable and the cryptography is published. A reasonable way to try E2EE storage without spending anything.

Frequently asked questions

Because the privacy storage market grew up around Swiss and other non-US jurisdictions, and the UK never developed an equivalent at consumer prices. That gap is the reason Bigby exists. Not automatically. E2EE is the strongest technical guarantee, and if your threat model includes the provider itself, choose it. Many people's actual requirement is "my files in my country, with a provider that has no reason to look", which jurisdiction and business model answer better than cryptography does.
